Listen to Variations for Marimba
|
Variations for Marimba is essentially a “classical” set of variations on a theme. However, the “theme” is elusive and evolves as the variations progress. Based on the compositional techniques of Bela Bartok, it is a profound tribute to the Hungarian composer and his work. His use of geometric proportion, bridge form, and synthetic scale models are just a few of the techniques used to determine the direction of the piece and create a unique tonal landscape.
This is a virtuosic work for 5-octave marimba using advanced 4-mallet techniques. Variations employs complicated double lateral stroke combinations, independent one-handed rolls, and large interval spreads. This piece is a challenge to the
advanced marimba student as well as the seasoned performer.
