Symphony No. 1 “Classical”, Mvt. IV Finale

by Sergei Prokofiev; transcribed by Dwayne Rice

Classical Symphony trans. Dwayne Rice

Listen to "Classical"

The “Classical” Symphony of Sergei Prokofiev (1891-1953) acquired the nickname “Classical” partly out of the composer’s secret hope that it would prove to be a classic and partly from his desire to employ the compositional style of Haydn using a more modern tonal vocabulary. The name has taken hold so thoroughly that it is virtually never identified in the more formal way.

He began the symphony in the summer of 1916, finishing it the following summer after discarding the original finale and completely rewriting it. No symphonic work of Prokofiev’s is performed more frequently or received with greater delight. Its directness, wit and fusion of Haydnesque clarity with his own quirky style have made it a classic in it’s own right.

This piece comes with a bound score and a CD ROM that contains the individual parts.
